Top 10 Reasons to Get to Know Ethica

   1. We’re pro-adoption. Yes, we are. We strongly believe that unethical adoption practices must be stopped, however, before they destroy adoption as an option for kids who need families.

   2. We’re independent and unbiased. We don’t take money from anyone who places children for adoption. Nor do we adhere to any specific religious or political affiliation.

   3. We advocate for adoptive families, who should have access to all the information they need about their children and who should be able to trust that their agency, facilitator or attorney will handle their adoption ethically.

   4. We advocate for expectant parents and families of origin, who should be allowed to decide what’s best for their children’s future without being subjected to undue coercion or enticement.

   5. Most of all, we advocate for the children, whether they’re foster children, orphans or adopted, and whether they’re infants or grownups. That’s why we oppose “safe haven” laws and advocate for the right of adult adoptees to have full access to their birth and placement records.

   6. Ethica’s Board of Directors is a diverse lot with plenty of expertise. We’ve got a social worker, attorneys, academics, a journalist and other professionals-and all of us have been directly touched by adoption in some way.

   7. Want to know what’s what in the world of adoption? Contact Ethica. Families, government officials, agencies and the media know they can rely on us for unbiased, thoroughly researched information. Ethica has been featured in USA Today, Reader’s Digest, NPR and other prominent media outlets.

   8. We help the kids left behind. When Liberia erupted in civil war in 2003, Ethica not only helped bring the already-adopted children home, but we also secured medical relief and distributed 27 tons of food to 5,738 Liberian orphans.

   9. We love cutting red tape. Through our Citizenship Project, held in cooperation with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Ethica helped clear a backlog of hundreds of pending citizenship cases for internationally adopted kids-including children who had waited up to 7 years to get  citizenship.

   10. We’re not afraid to take a stand. Ethica has issued statements and position papers on everything from open records laws to Guatemalan adoption to adoption by gay parents. Just a sampling:

“On the whole, the [Hague] regulations are a bitter disappointment”

“Unethical adoption practices will ultimately destroy adoption as an option for children in need of permanent families”

“Ethica believes that every American citizen should have complete and unencumbered access to information about his or her identity…”

“Like much hastily passed legislation motivated by good intentions, safe haven laws sound better in theory than they have played out in practice.”
