An independent voice for ethical adoption
This afternoon, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released an important fact sheet for parents adopting a child from Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake. The fact sheet includes advice on both immediate and less-urgent medical exams to obtain for children arriving from Haiti.
The aftermath of an earthquake presents a public health emergency, and families should exercise caution in seeking appropriate medical care for their child(ren) upon their exit from the earthquake zone. Prior to the earthquake, adopted children were able to have a medical visa exam to screen for infectious diseases. In the aftermath of the earthquake, it is every family’s responsibility to seek the same diligent screening for children arriving via humanitarian parole.
Please find the (1-page) information sheet here (pdf) and the longer (6-page) document that more fully explains the recommendations here (pdf). The CDC and USCIS recommend that parents bring the 6-page document with them to their child’s medical screening.
