Hague Status of the Republic of Georgia

Ethica has received reports that some adoption service providers are telling families that Georgia is not a Hague country and that agencies that work in Georgia will not have to be accredited to continue working there after April 1, 2008 when the Convention goes into effect for the U.S.

Georgia acceded to the Convention on April 9, 1991 and the Convention entered into force for Georgia on August 1, 1999. The State Department has confirmed that Georgia is a party to the Convention and that families applying to adopt from Georgia will need to use a Hague accredited agency for adoptions commenced after April 1, 2008.
