Sibling groups and special needs children looking for permanent families present unique placement problems for adoption specialists.
Forty-four percent of the state’s 375 children on the adoption exchange have moderate or severe physical or emotional needs.
Fifty-five percent of the waiting children are part of a sibling group, according to Lorenzo Davis, an outreach specialist for the Minnesota Adoption Resource Network
But Julia Weisz, a social worker from Morrison County, hopes those labels won’t discourage families from coming forward. Children have special needs just by being in foster care, she said. All have suffered loss.
There are plenty of success stories, she said.
“The child has a much better future,” she said. “They have a family to call their own.”
