Oregon and Washington sign agreement making it easier to place kids in foster homes with relatives

From Oregon Live:

Child welfare officials in Oregon and Washington inked a new agreement Monday that will make it faster and easier to place children who come into foster care with family or close friends on the other side of the border.

The new rules will cover children and their families in Oregon’s Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties and Washington’s Clark and Cowlitz counties. Before the agreement, officials said it would take as long as 90 days before a child taken into foster care could be placed with relatives in another state. With the agreement, officials say it should take less than a week to complete the home studies and paperwork.

The goal is to “quickly and safely keep children together with their families if they can’t be safely with their parents,” said Erinn Kelley-Siel, assistant director of Oregon’s Children, Adults and Families division.

The agreement took years to work through, officials said Monday. They expect about 150 children will be placed during the first year.
